These lofts are the modern use of the historic Steam Plant. The Steam Plant opened in 1940 and was built to heat the entire interior of the base buildings. Building 361 provided steam heat through a series of underground tunnels and pipes to 35 buildings. The four large boilers were fueled with coal that was delivered on railroad tracks along 6th Avenue on the east side of the base. After the base closed, it was redeveloped into exciting loft homes that reflect the steel and concrete of its heritage. Powerful looking and with its stacks redone into a modernistic look, it is one of the most unique looking buildings on Lowry.
